Simon Lesina-Debiasi is an architectural designer, researcher, and artist whose interdisciplinary work focuses on exploring questions around the environmental impact of digital network infrastructure and material intelligence in fabrication and design.

He is currently a Postgraduate Teaching Fellow in the architecture department at MIT and worked previously as research assistant at the Self Assembly lab, teaching assistant at MIT, lecturer at the School of Architecture at Northeastern University, and architectural designer at Landing Studio.

He received a SMArchS in Design and Computation MIT, a M.Arch degree from Princeton University School of Architecture, and a B.Arch from the Institute for Art and Architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.

From hell, to outer space, to deserts, and oceans, stories of monsters have historically been used to explain and mediate our relationship to the unknown. While depictions of monsters have changed over time, across cultures and time periods commonalities in their imagery and settings have created and informed monstrous tropes and monstrous worlds. The formation of the monster is inherently linked to the spaces they inhabit. Larger environments inform different types of monsters and inform relationships of fear, and architecture can begin to show how the intimate space of the monstrous or horror is often more common than alien. The manifestation of horror thus comes about through the reciprocal relationship between monster and place: it is not just the monster we fear: it is the space under the bed, the forest at night, or the pit in the basement.

This project tries to investigate
the infrastructural difficulties of COVID-19 testing facilities in the
beginning of the pandemic by looking at the lacking distribution of hospitals
and emergency facilities in New York. By occupying unused spaces around highway
bridges and traffic islands ‘Anonymous Health Services’ try to facilitate
health services whose patients do not necessarily want to be followed or seen
by the public. By being placed in a labyrinth like park structure, health
services like abortion clinics and safe injection facilities could provide safe
entrance for their patients. Through the configuration of pathways and small
plazas divided by walls and planted hedges, tight corners and path crossings it
is possible to navigate safely and unfollowed through the park. Through the
opening and closing of specific corridors and entrances, the structures can
adapt to different social distancing guidelines, configurating safe entrance
for both healthcare workers and people getting tested.

This project tries to investigate and
question the spread and impact of

fake news and conspiracy theories

by making a space that already

with its title negates any factual

relevance of what happens inside.

The project uses an existing airship

hangar, housing performance spaces,
a series of theaters, and meeting
rooms as well as not programmed

areas, that can be easily transformed.
Through the massive volume of the

existing structure, the main areas are located within the thickness of the
steel structure, allowing a entirely
evacuated central space. The visitors
are inclined to participate, occupy
and even live within this building,
as it is based on the word-of-mouth
transfer of nonsensical information

and beliefs.

Buildings, parks, atriums, advertisement, images, and infrastructures have been integrated into our everyday life, triggering a specific image of the term ‘public’ and ‘public space’, coining it as ‘common interest’ or spaces of ‘freedom’, while often obscuring the exploitation of the common for personal gain within economy, society, and politics. Architecture plays a key role not only as a carrying medium used as an active agent of operation through de-politization of the discipline itself, but also to cover up the readability of those situations within our physical and digital environment. As acting element enabling the appropriation of public spaces and imaginary for personal gain, its tools of analysis, observation, representation, and operation can also enable and condition the ‘unbuilding’ and reclaiming of public spaces.

This project tries to investigate the control and exploitation of public spaces, infrastructures, and democracy itself by private authorities, through the analysis and dissection of structures that utilized legal gray zones in regulations and zoning codes for the privatization of the ‘public imaginary’. The era of the post-fact world allowed to instrumentalize and direct this imaginary, amplified through the integration of digital media and communication; de-democratizing and regulating the socio-political nature of the public, while obscuring and covering its true nature behind a distinct interpretation of publicness.

Through a sequence of operations and set specific tools, those places of question can be identified, mapped, and investigated on their background for personal profit, as well as their resulting social impact. While undergoing a sequence of ‘unbuilding’ through occupation, dissection, and demolition, it is possible to disable those elements of evidence and structures abusing publicness. These identifiable political objects can be extracted to be staged as memorials (or cenotaphs), serve the purpose of archival material for further research, or can be de-naturalized by disintegrating their function and intent within the structure itself. The elements of question are site specific and determine the politics of objects and its future purpose. Finally, the previous operations and reconfigurations require filling or patching of the building in order to allow a democratic future and to clear it from another attempt of privatization. The result of the interventions should not be considered a unique technique for a single instance, but rather as an accessible and growing set of tools applicable and adjustable to the respective sites in question.

Coney Island 2019

exhibited at the 12th International Architecture Biennial in Sao Paul, 2019, as part of ‘Liquid Landscapes”, curated by Mario Gandelsonas and Curt Gambetta
Coney Island is an island only by name. But this was not always the case: its relationship to Brooklyn’s landmass changed according to the whims of industry and recreation. In the 18th century, a shallow creek was dredged in order to serve light industry along the Island’s northern edge, spanning from present-day Gravesend Bay in the west to Sheepshead Bay in the east. The creek was severed and the island was transformed into a peninsula because of illegal infill made during the 1930s. While the south side of the Island became a famous hotbed for seaside amusement, the north side along the creek served the recreation activities of locals. The video follows the 5.5-kilometer path of the creek along the northern edge of the Island, a route that reveals public housing blocks, storage facilities and autobody shops as well as two lively parks at either end. Despite massive changes in topography and use, hints of the original creek’s existence are embedded in the Island’s street grid and highway infrastructure. While the path of the creek currently enjoys relative stability, planned changes in recreation and transportation infrastructure will transform the ecology and topography of the area. The spit in Gravesend Bay—where water originating from Sheepshead Bay is poured from the barrel—is the proposed site of a controversial new ferry dock and dredging of the spit of land. The dredging and infilling of the creek continues to alter the ecological, industrial and economic significance of the creek, which, at its core, fundamentally shapes the experience of life on Coney Island.

This public k-12 school project is thought to be located in
Trenton NJ. Offering classrooms, bathrooms, gyms, recess spaces, a theater,
tennis courts, cantinas, and plenty of outdoor space, this project does not
only contribute to the teachers and students but offers a large open and
accessible park area in between the buildings for public use.


To limit the footprint of the school buildings, both theater and
gym are sunken into the ground. Tennis courts are distributed over the roof
area of several blocks. Each classroom offers at least one wall with windows,
and close proximity to restrooms. The playgrounds are elevated from the ground,
only accessible through the corridors in the upper level of the school,
offering a safe play and recreation space for students. Simultaneously, those
artificial landscapes offer shading and weather protection for some outdoor
meeting and theater spaces beneath. Through the load bearing structure on the
façade of the buildings it is able to allow for large windows, expansive
circulation, and the additional suspended playground structures. While most of
the ground floor is publicly accessible, several entry points with
administrational office spaces allow easy access for students and visitors.

The creation of an imbalance in between greenhouse and visitors
space directs the orientation of the building. Too many visitors in the library
and workspaces, and the human environment lowers while closing the parking lot
beneath, if there are not enough people researching environmental change while
the plants are overgrowing, the greenhouse side lowers to the surface of Lake
Carnegie.


Through this project, the relationship and balance in between
the human and natural environments stand in a direct dialogue, communicating
the state of the symbiosis in the orientation of the project. The dialogue in
between a micro-cosmos of human built artificial environments and controlled
natural environment, as well as triggers and dependencies are brought to an
extreme, investigating the fragility of nature within the environmental
research laboratory itself. The building becomes both a polemic gesture of
artificial environments as well as commentary on the impact of our behavior on
our natural environment, in form of a gigantic balancing act.
